Tremella
Zuplex's Tremella (snow mushroom) extract is rich in polysaccharides that function as potent moisturisers, capable of retaining up to 500 times their weight in water, thereby forming a hydrating film on the skin that enhances moisture retention and elasticity. It also improves the skin microbiome and acts as an effective prebiotic.

SOURCE
Tremella fuciformis, commonly known as the snow mushroom or silver ear fungus, is a jelly fungus native to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including parts of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It thrives in warm, humid climates. The fungus is characterised by its translucent, frilly, gelatinous fruiting bodies that can vary in color from white to pale yellow. Zuplex's Tremella fuciformis is cultivated on natural wood substrate inside a sophisticated controlled environment. The farm is situated in Northern China and the technique used is the special co-culture method required for successful Tremella mushroom farming that has been developed and passed down over generations.
TRADITIONAL USES
Tremella fuciformis has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and East Asian wellness practices. It has been prized for centuries, especially among the imperial courts of China, for its reputed ability to nourish the body, enhance skin radiance, and promote longevity. Traditionally, it is considered a 'yin tonic', used to moisten the lungs, support immune function, and treat dry coughs and respiratory irritation. In beauty rituals, snow fungus was consumed as a delicacy in soups and teas to hydrate the skin from within, earning it the nickname "natural hyaluronic acid." Historical texts often associate it with enhanced complexion, youthful skin, and vitality, and it was famously favored by Yang Guifei, one of China’s legendary beauties.
ACTIVE COMPONENTS
Tremella fuciformis extract is rich in acidic heteropolysaccharides, primarily composed of xylose, mannose, and glucuronic acid, linked through α-1,3-glycosidic bonds. These polysaccharides exhibit excellent water-binding properties and form a soft, flexible film on the skin’s surface, mimicking the moisture-retention function of hyaluronic acid. Additionally, the extract contains minor sugars such as arabinose and fucose, along with trace amounts of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and antioxidants, contributing to its overall skin-conditioning and antioxidant profile
CLAIMS
In cosmetic applications, Tremella fuciformis acts as a powerful hydrating and skin-soothing agent. Its polysaccharides create a breathable film that significantly reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — a 2023 study* demonstrated a 12.4% TEWL reduction, validating its effectiveness as a natural humectant. The polysaccharides present in the extract are ideal prebiotics for the skin biome. The extract also shows antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals and helping to protect the skin from environmental stress and premature aging. Clinical studies further confirm its non-irritating nature and dermatological safety, making it ideal for sensitive-skin formulations. These combined properties make Tremella fuciformis a well-supported, multifunctional ingredient for use in hydrating, anti-ageing, and barrier-repair skincare products
