SOURCE
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), a member of the Solanaceae family, is a small evergreen shrub native to India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. It thrives in arid and semi-arid climates. The plant is characterised by its green, oval leaves and small, red berries enclosed in a papery husk. Its roots, the most pharmacologically significant part of the plant, have been extensively used in traditional medicine for their adaptogenic and therapeutic properties. Zuplex's Ashwagandha is grown on our community partners cultivation site at Dakeni in the uThukela Valley in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
TRADITIONAL USES
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng or Indian winter cherry, has a rich history in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Revered as a "Rasayana" (rejuvenator), it has been used for millennia to promote health and longevity. It is used to treat a wide range of ailments, reflecting its adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, and stress-relieving properties. Traditionally, its roots and leaves were made into pastes or decoctions for skin care, wound healing, and the alleviation of swelling and ulcers. It is also widely used to bolster physical strength, enhance immunity, and balance mental health. Its adaptogenic qualities make it effective in managing stress, which is linked to several conditions like hair loss and skin issues. These traditional uses have been validated and expanded upon through modern pharmacological research, showcasing Ashwagandha's extensive cosmetic potential.
ACTIVE COMPONENTS
Ashwagandha extract is a versatile ingredient, rich in bioactive compounds that make it a valuable addition to both skincare and haircare products. Its roots are abundant in withanolides, steroidal lactones known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties. These compounds are complemented by alkaloids like somniferine, sitoindosides, and tropine, which further enhance its stress-modulating effects. Additionally, Ashwagandha contains flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, all of which contribute to its ability to neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative damage. The roots also include amino acids like proline, known for supporting collagen production, and trace minerals that promote cellular health.
CLAIMS & ACTIVITY
In skincare, withanolide compounds help combat oxidative stress, promote cellular regeneration, and protect the skin from environmental aggressors like UV radiation and pollution. Additionally, flavonoids and tannins in the extract enhance hydration and elasticity, supporting a youthful and radiant complexion. In haircare, Ashwagandha's anti-inflammatory properties soothe the scalp, reducing irritation and promoting a healthier environment for hair growth. Its adaptogenic qualities address stress-related hair issues by balancing cortisol levels, a common factor in hair thinning and loss. The extract also strengthens hair follicles by neutralising free radicals and improving blood circulation to the scalp, resulting in thicker, more resilient strands. With its holistic benefits, Ashwagandha extract offers an integrative approach to enhancing both skin and hair health, making it a standout ingredient in cosmetic formulations.
